Flood Smart

Are you wondering about flood insurance? Do you have floods in your area? Do you live in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA)? Please find links and resources below to help you learn more about flood insurance from Dare County, North Carolina and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

  • Contact your Insurance Agent (the one who sold you Homeowner's, Flood and/or Wind & Hail). Ask your agent to explain the flood insurance for your structure. If the agent leaves you with questions, ask for the number of the underwriter that holds your Flood policy.

  • Read up on the Dare County Planning Department Resources. The web page contains additional contact information. Consider contacting them if you need additional clarification from your insurance agent.

  • Read up on the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Resources.

  • Read up on the FEMA Resources. Everything you need to know about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Know your Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and Base Flood Elevation (BFE) information.

Dare County:

  • Dare County Geospatial Information System (GIS) http://daregis.darenc.com/website/dare/viewer.htm
  • Keep zooming in and panning until you find your street and structure. Click the Flood Zone layer on. You should be looking for a Base Flood Elevation (BFE)
  • AE (EL #) - typically on the ocean and sound side
  • VE (EL #) - typically on the ocean and sound front

North Carolina:

  • North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Information System (FMIS) http://floodmaps.nc.gov/fmis/
  • Enter your full street address. Use the map layers and legend to find the flood hazards in your area.
  • Go to the Data Download area to download the FIS Report by choosing Dare County.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA):

  • FEMA Map Service Center (MSC) http://www.msc.fema.gov for the official Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM)
    • Enter your full address.
    • See search results for a link to a map. If not, see below. Viewing tips:
      • Click on the Green dot with a magnifying glass to view the map.
      • Be patient this may take a minute.
      • Use the zoom and pan buttons to locate your area.
      • Create a FIRMette and save as a pdf and print.
      • FIRMette Tutorial is located on the bottom right of the main page.
  • If the map did not locate your area, click on Flood Maps in the middle of the main page.
    • Choose your state, county and community from the dropdowns (you may need to choose statewide for unincorporated).
    • Click to get the map(s). See above tips to view and print the maps.
  • Flood Information Study (FIS)
    • Product catalog, Click on Effective Flood Information Study, Choose your state, county and community from the dropdowns (you may need to choose statewide for unincorporated areas).
    • Click to get the FIS. See above tips to view the FIS.
