Please Support Funding of the NC Fund
to Restore and Protect Our Beach

We need your help and personal support

The beach and dunes of Avon are washing away. Homes and infrastructure in your community are threatened. Even the Avon Pier seems to be in jeopardy. A beach replenishment project, similar to the ones in Buxton, Nags Head and other Dare County communities, would restore our beach, protect infrastructure and maintain the most important resource we come here to enjoy, our beach.

Unfortunately, most money in the Dare County Beach Nourishment Fund has already been committed to other County projects. Thankfully, the State Legislature recognizes the importance of beaches up and down the coast of North Carolina. Last year they established a Storm Damage Mitigation Fund, Section 6 of HB 56, which will allow the State to cost-share with communities for storm protection projects such as beach nourishment. However, no money was allocated to the fund. We need the Legislature to fund the Storm Damage Mitigation Fund. If it were funded, the County funds could be matched one-to-one. A beach nourishment project for Avon to restore our beach could be financially feasible.

How can you help?

Your local State Representative and State Senator need to understand the importance of a fully funded Storm Damage Mitigation Fund. If you live outside of Dare County but in North Carolina, please contact your home town State legislators.

Dare County and out-of-state residents should contact Representative Boswell and Senator Cook.

Representative Beverly G. Boswell
N.C. House of Representatives

Raleigh, NC 27603-5925

Senator Bill Cook
N.C. Senate

A personal letter from you to each of them, urging them to vote for funding, will help our cause. Download suggested text in Word or PDF format. Whatever you elect to say, please write today and send that letter by the Postal Service. The sooner we can get a project underway, the sooner we can protect your beach.
